❗️Russia Hits Record Oil Revenues - in face of Western sanctions

The Russian economy is riding out the pressure of sanctions on the back of $60BN in crude sales. In comparison, the whole of 2021 saw oil revenue total $120BN

It's exposed an intl divide in responding to Moscow, and comes despite oil production reportedly dropping by around 700,000 barrels per day. Some exports have been diverted to Turkey and Italy, both posting far bigger orders in April compared to last month.

US Treasury Sec Janet Yellen admitted banning Russian oil and gas could hurt Europe severely - while having “very little negative impact on Russia." German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also warned of a “dramatic economic crisis” if a total embargo is imposed.

Kiev Tears Down People's Friendship Monument

Following orders by Kiev’s mayor Vitali Klitschko, the bronze landmark featuring the statue of two workers has been toppled.

The figures were a part of the larger People's Friendship Arch monument, which was completed in 1982, in celebration of the 1,500th anniversary of Kiev and the 60th of the USSR.

Once the statue is gone, the arch will be painted in the colors of Ukrainian flag, Klitschko said.

Swiss Bank Reveals how much Russian Money it Holds

UBS says its holding is relatively small, with roughly $22 billion in invested assets for Russian clients. The figure was unveiled in the bank’s latest quarterly report on Tuesday.

The money belongs to Russian residents potentially affected by sanctions placed on Moscow by the EU, and Switzerland in connection with Russia’s military operation in Ukraine.

This is the first time UBS, Switzerland’s largest financial institution and the largest private bank in the world, disclosed the proportion of assets it manages for Russians.

According to the quarterly report, around 0.7% of the total $3.145 trillion in invested assets in UBS’ wealth management division belongs to “Russian persons not entitled to residency in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland,” potentially subject to sanctions-related restrictions.

Ukraine Apologizes to Japan for ‘Fascism’ Video

Kiev has apologized to Japan after it released an anti-Russian video ending with a shot of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Emperor Hirohito - describing the three as fascists.

The video, first posted nearly a month ago, condemns Russian President Vladimir Putin and describes the Russian political system as “ruscism.” It closes with images of Germany’s Hitler, Italy’s Mussolini, and Japan’s Hirohito, along with the text “Fascism and Nazism were defeated in 1945. We will fight ruscism, here and now.”

The head of Japan’s Parliament’s foreign policy panel announced that the government “requested the video be deleted,” and that Ukraine apologize diplomatically for the blunder.

Although an Axis power, Japan was led by Prime Minister Hideki Tojo during World War II, with Hirohito allowed to retain his title after the country’s defeat. However, many argue that the emperor should have been convicted as a war criminal.
