Popular Ukrainian Zelensky critic arrested in Spain

Prominent blogger Anatoly Shariy was arrested on Wednesday in a joint operation by Spanish, Ukrainian police, and international partners, the SBU said in a statement.

Shariy is wanted by Kiev on charges of treason, as well as infringing Ukraine’s national security through his activities in the media realm.

He had been granted political asylum in the EU by Lithuania in 2012, after fleeing persecution by the Yanukovych govt, whom Western media often branded pro-Russian.

After the Maidan coup in 2014 the blogger remained a harsh critic of Ukrainian authorities - including former President Petro Poroshenko and his successor Zelensky.

Russian Oil Sanctions "Nuclear Bomb" On Hungary Economy - Orban

Hungarian PM Viktor Orban has warned the EU's full ban on Russian oil would be like a nuclear bomb on his country's economy after he rejected initial proposals, demanding a 5-year exemption instead of the 1-year suggested.

In response the bloc will reportedly compromise by offering Budapest an extra year along with Slovakia, while the Czech Republic will be given until summer 2024. EU ambassadors are set to discuss the revised proposals Friday.

Orban conceded he was willing to engage in constructive cooperation but insisted Hungary would need access to its currently blocked $7.6bn pandemic relief fund to help wean itself off Russian energy.

Eastern Germany Faces Petrol Shortages If Russian Embargo Imposed

German Economics Minister Robert Habeck has warned the Eastern part of the country - supplied by the Schwedt refinery, which runs entirely on Russian oil and also supplies 90% of gasoline, diesel and fuel to Berlin - faces a shortage in petrol supplies if the full Russian energy embargo is imposed.

German broadcaster DW reported Monday that the Schwedt plant could even be forced to shut down if the measures are approved.

Germany has reduced its proportion of Russian oil imports from 35% to 12% since the conflict in Ukraine began.

Brazilian presidential frontrunner Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has slammed the Western narrative on the Ukraine crisis as simplistic, claiming Vladimir Zelensky is equally to blame for not discussing NATO/EU membership first.

The former President said that the fanfare surrounding Zelensky has made him think he is “the cherry on your cake” after getting “a standing ovation by all the parliamentarians”, while taking aim at the effect of the sanctions.

“Argentina, Bolivia will also have to pay. You’re not punishing Putin. You’re punishing many different countries, you’re punishing mankind.”
