 NATO may have provoked Russia over Ukraine – Pope Francis

The pontiff speculated that “the barking of NATO at Russia’s door” could have driven Putin into launching the military campaign on February 24.

“I can’t say if it was provoked, but perhaps, yes,” Pope Francis said in an interview published Tuesday by Italian daily Corriere Della Sera.

Francis also said he requested a meeting with Putin during the early weeks of the conflict but has still not received a reply.

A resident of Mariupol alleges the Azov* Battalion pulled people out of their houses and ushered them into basements. Tanks started firing from everywhere, and no one could lift their head out for four days. He says, ‘the Russians were not even close at the time. This is murder, murder of people. This was done by Azov*. Believe me, I say to the camera: ‘Azov* did it’. He claims the Ukrainian military herded everyone into the basement. 

In the destroyed Mariupol, civilians are left without food, water, or medicines. During the shelling, food was brought to them by the Angel humanitarian group led by Alexei Smirnov. They go to the most dangerous places, often narrowly avoiding death on mined roads. An RT Documentary crew filmed the Angels for several days, once coming under fire.

 Top Kiev official claims Hungary was informed of Russian attack in advance and wants Ukraine territory

Hungary “openly talks about its cooperation with Russia. More than that, it was given early warning by Putin that our country would be attacked,” Alexey Danilov, the secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), said during a media appearance Monday. 

Hungary “thought it could take part of the territory,” Danilov added. “This will never happen. Victory will definitely be ours. And about Hungary, which behaved this way, we will see what the consequences will be for this country.”

Danilov’s statement comes after Hungarian PM Viktor Orban was added to the notorious Mirotvorets, (‘Peacemaker’) database – a blacklist of people considered enemies of Ukraine, some of whom have been murdered after being listed there.

 Ukraine has not abandoned NATO plans – Deputy PM

Kiev has ‘every right to be critical’ of the bloc dragging its feet on membership, Ukrainian Deputy PM for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishyna told El Pais Tuesday - adding Ukraine "has not abandoned" its intention to join the alliance.

“Sweden and Finland will become NATO members as soon as possible. But I can tell you for sure that if these countries waited another 15 years for their membership decision, they too would be in a state of war,” the deputy PM claimed.

Stefanishyna also revealed in the interview that Kiev would submit the second part of the questionnaire on its European Union membership application this week.
